USC’s Rayah Marshall Selected As Semifinalist For Naismith Women’s Defensive Player of the Year

Women’s Basketball | February 27, 2023

The nation’s No. 3 shot blocker this season, sophomore forward Rayah Marshall has been a defensive force to reckon with since setting foot at USC. Her efforts have not gone unnoticed, as Marshall has been named a semifinalist for the prestigious Naismith Women’s Defensive Player of the Year.

Marshall’s 89 blocks so far this season are the third most in by a Trojan program history, trailing only the great Lisa Leslie’s junior and senior season tallies. Her 3.42 blocks per game this season has her a No. 3 in the nation, while she’s also top-10 on the boards — ranked No. 7 in the land with her 8.4 defensive rebounds per game to date.

Marshall is one of 10 players on the list of semifinalists for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year award. Finalists will be named March 13, and the winner will be revealed March 29.

Marshall and her fellow Trojans are on their way to Las Vegas this week as the No. 6 seed in the Pac-12 Tournament, opening up Wednesday (March 1) against Oregon State in the first round.
