Fan, Simmons Earn First Team All-Conference Honors for CNU Women's Basketball; Broderick Named Coach of the Year

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Christopher Newport graduate student Sondra Fan (Poquoson, Va.) and senior Anaya Simmons (Williamsburg, Va.) were each named first team All-Conference selections on Tuesday afternoon in a release from the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference. Additionally, head coach Bill Broderick and the rest of the CNU women’s basketball coaching staff was named the “Bill Finney” Coaching Staff of the Year for the fourth time.

The 2022-23 C2C All-Conference awards were released Tuesday afternoon with Broderick selected as the top helmsman for the second straight year. He has now been named the Conference Coach of the Year four times in the last six seasons.

Fan becomes the first three-time first team All-Conference selection since Sam Porter (2016-18) and joins an exclusive group of only eight Captains to accomplish the feat — Chelsie Schweers (2008-11), Tia Moore (2000-03), Misty Hart (1996-98), Alice Streetman (1993-95), Karen Barefoot (1991-94), Pam Stewart (1985-87). Simmons collected her second straight first team All-Conference certificate after leading the nation in field-goal percentage in back-to-back years.

With assistant coaches Julia Duggan, Terrance Gist, and Chantel Roberts, head coach Bill Broderick guided the Captains to a second straight perfect regular season. CNU Women’s Basketball is 24-0 heading into the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference and has continued a dominant run since December of 2019, going 67-1 in that timeframe. It marked the third time in program history that CNU has registered a perfect run through the regular season and remains one of only seven NCAA programs, men’s or women’s, without a loss in NCAA play at any division. The Captains have put together one of the most dominant seasons in CNU lore, outscoring opponents by a nation-leading 36.8 points per game. The offense ranks third in the country (87.4 ppg) and the scoring defense is ranked 26th (50.6 ppg allowed); the Captains Chaos defense ranks second nationally in turnover margin (+14.25) and fourth in steals per game (17.2) this season.

Fan and Simmons were each named D3hoops.com Preseason All-Americans prior to the year and paid off that designation with outstanding seasons in 2022-23.
