Nets trade Kyrie Irving to the Mavericks for Spencer Dinwiddie

Nets’ Cam Thomas reacts to big game; Kyrie Irving trade request

The Brooklyn Nets are trading guard Kyrie Irving and forward Markieff Morris to the Dallas Mavericks for Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, a 2029 unprotected first-round pick, and second-round picks in 2027 and 2029, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic. After Irving’s trade request became public on Friday, it looks like it took only two days for him to get his wish to get out of Brooklyn.

This trade came about because Irving and the Nets were unable to come to agreement on a contract extension that satisfied both parties after essentially months of negotiations. There were multiple reports stating that Irving wanted to sign a long-term deal with Brooklyn, but after Friday, it looks like Irving just wants a long-term deal wherever it comes from.

There have been no indications if Dallas trading for Irving means that they will give Irving the deal that he wants. The Nets were faced with few options as Irving will be a unrestricted free agent this offseason and there were reports stating that Brooklyn didn’t trade Irving by the deadline, he would sit out the rest of this season.

Dinwiddie is averaging 17.7 points and 5.3 assists per game while shooting 45.5% from the field and 40.5% from behind the three-point line while Finney-Smith is averaging 9.1 points and 4.7 rebounds while shooting 41.6% from the field and 35.5% from three-point land.
