Nets offered Kyrie Irving extension before trade request

Before Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving requested a trade, the Nets offered Irving an extension according to The Athletic. However, it looks like the reason that Irving declined the extension is because the contract included guarantee stipulations.

There have been numerous reports that Irving wants a max contract extension, or a new deal, that includes no stipulations or reasons for his money to be taken away from him. Irving attempted to get a contract extension from the Nets this past offseason only for Brooklyn to refuse to commit to him long-term without any clauses that allow them to recoup money because of Irving missing time.

When that didn’t work, the Nets allowed Irving to pursue sign-and-trade opportunities to amounted to nothing. After that, Irving opted in to his player option for this season. It looks like Irving tried to do the same thing recently and the Nets did not bite. The Athletic gives more details on what went down during the contract extension talks between Irving and the Nets:

“The Nets recently offered Irving an extension with guarantee stipulations, according to league sources, an offer which was declined. Sources with direct knowledge of the negotiations who have been granted anonymity so that they could speak freely say that the extension offer was not well received and that there have been principle differences that have emerged between the Nets and Irving.”
