Monarchs Fend off Falcons for Victory

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. The Methodist women’s basketball team fought to earn a 73-62 win over the Pfeiffer Falcons on Saturday afternoon. The Monarchs did not trail for the entire second half on their way to the 11-point USA South victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • It was a three-point contest to begin the outing as Methodist sank the first shot of the day – a Jessica Drake triple. The Falcons responded with a three-point basket of their own, followed by another three from Drake. A second Pfeiffer three was answered by Jillian Peterson, whose three-pointer made the score 9-6. The teams briefly took the game into the paint before Methodist’s Melissa D’Oleo joined in on the action from behind the arc, giving the Monarchs an 18-10 advantage. From there, Pfeiffer closed the quarter on a 10-0 run.
  • Methodist scored the first eight points to begin the second quarter, reclaiming the lead. Pfeiffer clawed back to tie it up at 30-30, but Aniyah Tate recorded the last bucket of the period to give Methodist a two-point halftime edge.
  • With the first points of the second half, the Falcons evened the score. Baskets by the Monarchs stretched their lead to as many as five, but the persistent Falcons tied the game again, this time at 43-43.
