The latest injury update on RJ Davis

UNC basketball coach Hubert Davis provided an update regarding junior guard RJ Davis after the team’s victory over Syracuse on Tuesday night.

As Roy Williams always says, RJ Davis is a “tough little nut.”

The junior guard from White Plains, New York displayed his toughness against Syracuse, as he dealt with plenty of hard contact.

Not only did he suffer a finger injury, one that hampered him early in the season, Davis also took a shot near the eye area as well. Both injuries seemed to bother him a bit, but the tough junior was able to play through it.

To cap it all off, Davis took an elbow off the face near the end of the game, which resulted in him not being able to finish the contest for the UNC basketball program. It was a basketball-type play, but it still was one that left Davis walking into the locker room with a bloody towel.

On Wednesday, Hubert Davis provided the latest update regarding Davis’ status:

“I don’t fully know (his status). RJ is fine, but he got hit a number of times. He had a dislocated finger on his shooting hand. He got hit in the nose. The last one, the charge that he took, he got hit in the eye so he’s pretty banged up. But in terms of being alert and aware, he’s fine. He is tough. His willingness to stick his body and sacrifice his body out there on the floor was a difference maker for us in being able to have a chance to win the game.

The Tar Heels head coach confirmed that Davis dislocated a finger, which is concerning given that the junior began the season (and struggled a bit) as he worked through the injury. His status is still up in the air, but it is great to see that the junior was alert and aware given the two pretty significant blows he took to the head area.

No one can ever question Davis’ toughness, as it was on full display on Tuesday night. The good news is that he’ll have extra time to rest, as the UNC basketball program is not set to take the court until February 1.
