Lau Scores 20 in Northwestern Victory Over Chicago State


EVANSTON, Ill. —ย Caroline Lau scored a career-high 20 points to help lead the Northwestern women’s basketball team past the Chicago State Cougars 87-64 at home Wednesday.

The Wildcats (7-13) had three players score in double figures, led by Lau, who had 20 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two blocks. Caileigh Walsh added a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds and Paige Mott helped out with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Northwestern out-rebounded Chicago State 62-40 in Wednesday’s game, paced by Walsh’s 10 boards. That marks a program record for rebounds in a game, eclipsing the ‘Cats’ 60 boards against Niagara earlier this season. The Wildcats also grabbed 20 offensive rebounds and scored 16 second chance points.

Northwestern’s defense held Chicago State to only 29.5 percent shooting from the field, including 21.4 percent from beyond the arc.

How It Happened

Northwestern started out the scoring by going on an 8-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Jasmine McWilliams, to take an early lead with 6:12 left in the first quarter. The Wildcats then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 21-15 advantage. Northwestern did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 21 points close to the basket.

Northwestern built that first quarter lead to 24-17 before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 7:32 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from McWilliams, to increase its lead to 30-17. The Cougars cut into that lead, but the Wildcats still enjoyed a 38-30 advantage heading into halftime. Northwestern dominated in the paint, scoring 10 of its 17 points close to the basket.

Northwestern continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on an 8-0 run to expand its lead further to 50-37 with 5:13 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Wildcats added 10 points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 68-45 edge. Northwestern’s 30 points in the third quarter were their most in any single period this season.

Northwestern kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run to grow the lead to 87-62 with 17 seconds to go in the contest. The Cougars narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Wildcats still cruised the rest of the way for the 87-64 win. Northwestern got a boost from its…
