Pueyo Named to Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Watchlist


ATLANTA, Ga. – Arizona senior guard Helena Pueyo has been named to the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Watchlist, as announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club on Tuesday.

Pueyo is the first Wildcat to be named to the watchlist for the award since Aari McDonald in the 2020-21 season.

The Palma de Mallorca, Spain, native is having a standout season, averaging 26.1 minutes per game coming off the bench. 

Pueyo averages 2.6 steals per game to lead the Pac-12 and rank 33rd nationally and has grabbed at least one steal in every game this season, including six in the Wildcats’ win over New Mexico. She has totaled a team-leading 50 in the 2022-23 season. She additionally leads the Wildcats in blocks with 15 this season, three of which came in the game against New Mexico, and is averaging 3.3 rebounds per game. 

On the offensive end of the court, the senior is averaging 6.5 points per game on 57.3% shooting. She additionally doles out 3.1 assists per game and is tied for first in the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.9. Pueyo scored a career-high 22 points at San Diego this season and sent out nine assists at New Mexico for the most in a single game in her career.
