North Carolina Edges Syracuse, 72-68

North Carolina (15-6, 7-3) scored the game’s final six points to turn away a strong Syracuse (13-8, 6-4), 72-68, in front of the 20,761 in the JMA Wireless Dome on Tuesday night.

Joseph Girard III, who had given the Orange a 68-66 lead on a 3-pointer with 1:23 left, finished with a squad-best 18 points. Judah Mintz (17 points) and Chris Bell (15 points) rounded out the Orange performers in double-digits. Jesse Edwards accumulated eight points, seven rebounds and five blocks before foulling out. 

 

HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED 

In the final 21 seconds of action, North Carolina made 3-of-5 shots at the foul line with a layup by Pete Nance in between. Mintz committed a flagrant one-foul, sending Caleb Love to the line in the final 10 seconds of action.  Love connected on three of four shots to secure the Orange loss.

EVEN FROM THE ARC

Both squads connected four three-pointers in the opening frame. Caleb Love (3-for-3) and Girard (2-for-2)  each shot 100% from beyond the arc.

 

In addition to Girard, two other Orange performers made three-point field goals in the first 20 minutes. Halfway through the opening frame, Chris Bell used his first 3-pointer of the night to slice the Tar Heel’s advantage to three points, 24-21.
