Twitter erupts as Hawkeyes topple No. 2 Ohio State

The ninth-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes entered having lost four straight in the series versus Ohio State. The latest was last season’s instant classic 92-88 Buckeyes win that featured 16 lead changes and five ties.

Caitlin Clark went off for 43 points in that contest and fellow Hawkeye star Monika Czinano added 23 points and nine rebounds. It wasn’t quite enough, though.

Iowa did get the last laugh by winning both the regular season and conference tournament championships last season, but Caitlin Clark and Iowa weren’t willing to wait as long in this 2022-23 women’s college basketball season for bragging rights.

With Ohio State ascending to its highest ranking in program history at No. 2, Iowa invaded Value City Arena looking to hand the Buckeyes their first loss.

Mission accomplished. Clark had one of her finest performances, scoring 28 points on 8-of-19 shooting from the floor and Iowa toppled previously unbeaten Ohio State, 83-72. While she connected on just 3-of-10 3-point tries, she made several at pivotal moments.

Beyond that, it was what the West Des Moines native did across the board to pace Iowa. The Hawkeyes superstar delivered her eighth career triple-double, racking up 15 assists and reeling in 10 rebounds.

Monika Czinano was incredibly efficient from the floor as well, knocking down 11-of-13 field goal tries and scoring 22 points. Kate Martin added 13 points and 11 rebounds.

By the time the night was over, the Hawkeyes had their first win over an AP-top 2 team since the 1999-00 season. It also snapped that skid against Ohio State in a hurry.

As expected, social media erupted in praise for Clark’s latest virtuoso performance and Iowa’s statement victory on the road at Ohio State. Here were the best social media responses from Hawkeye fans, media and other observers.
