Thunder Journal: Weigh-In on the Play-In

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander did it again.

SGA hit yet another game-winner, this time with on the road against the Nuggets. The very same Denver team that is the #1 seed in the West, has the best home record in the NBA and had just won nine straight games.

Sure, the Nuggets didn’t have their MVP candidate Serbian 7 footer. But neither did the Thunder. Get well soon, Poku.

The win improved OKC to 23-24 on the season.

The big looming question for OKC fans now is whether or not the Thunder are going to be play-in/playoff team. We are 57% of the way through the season and OKC is in a three-way tie for the 9 seed. The top 6 seeds are guaranteed a playoff spot. Seeds 7-10 will duke it out in a play-in tournament.

The Spurs and Rockets are all but guaranteed to wrap up seeds 14 and 15. The Jazz are free-falling after their hot start and most experts expect Utah to be sellers at the deadline. Let’s say the Jazz take the 13 seed. That leaves 12 teams fighting for 10 spots.

Let’s go ahead and call the Nuggets and Grizzlies locks. For the purposes of this exercise, we’ll hesitantly say the Kings (really!) and Pelicans locks.
