Monarchs Fall Behind Versus Pride

GREENSBORO, N.C. The Methodist women’s basketball team was unable to secure a road victory Saturday afternoon as it traveled to Greensboro to take on Greensboro College. The Monarchs outscored the Pride in the first quarter but couldn’t hold on as Greensboro earned an 84-65 win to remain undefeated in USA South Athletic Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Monarchs looked sharp in the first quarter with Aniyah Tate and Jillian Peterson teaming up to score Methodist’s first 11 points. A three-pointer by Jessica Drake gave the Monarchs a 14-11 advantage. Methodist was the first to hit the 20-point mark, boasting a four-point lead, but Greensboro narrowed the gap, giving the Monarchs just a 24-23 edge as the first period ended.
  • Methodist bounced back out to a four-point lead early in the second quarter following four more points from Tate and a layup by Rebecca McGaughnea. However, the Pride closed the half on a 17-4 run, putting the visiting Monarchs down by nine.
  • Peterson’s three-point basket to start the third quarter decreased Methodist’s deficit to six, but Greensboro continued to turn up the heat, scoring the next seven points to go up by 13. The Monarchs cut the Pride’s lead back down to seven twice, yet, a 10-1 Greensboro scoring streak would inflate their advantage to 16 points.
