SEATTLE – The Washington women’s basketball team (10-7, 2-5) put up a fight against No. 9 UCLA (16-3, 5-2) Friday night, but ultimately lost 47-51 in Alaska Airlines Arena.
“This is an incredibly high-character team,” head coach Tina Langley said. “Really tough. I love how they fight.”
Washington went into halftime with the lead, holding UCLA to just 22.9% shooting and the lowest scoring half (18 points) the Bruins have put up all season.
The Husky defense held UCLA to a 32.3% field goal percentage, their lowest in conference play (37.9%) and the season as a whole (40.5%). UCLA’s 51 points is the lowest they had scored all season.
With 1:30 left to play, Washington was down by just two. The Huskies continued to fight, keeping it close down to the final seconds.
Jayda Noble led the Huskies in scoring with nine points. Trinity Oliver recorded a new career high in rebounding with 11, and Washington out-rebounded UCLA 46-37.
“So proud that we out-rebounded them today,” Langley said. “It’s a big deal. It’s something we worked on this week. I thought they really battled in a very physical game.”
Up next for the Huskies, Washington hosts USC Sunday afternoon for a 12 p.m. tipoff in Alaska Airlines Arena.
