Paris Powers UNC Women's Basketball to upset over No. 4 Notre Dame

The UNC women’s basketball program ended its four-game in huge fashion, as they upset No. 4-ranked Notre Dame on Sunday afternoon.

In search of their first ACC victory (while looking to end a four-game losing streak), the UNC women’s basketball program pulled off a major upset on Sunday, defeating No. 4-ranked Notre Dame at Carmichael Arena in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

The game was one that featured offensive struggles from both sides, as the Tar Heels and Fighting Irish both played some strong defense throughout. However, it was North Carolina that rallied in front of its home crowd, thanks in large part to a huge fourth-quarter performance from Paulina Paris.

Paris was outstanding once again, as she scored 11 of her game-high 16 points in the fourth quarter. She was responsible for all of the Tar Heels’ offense to start the final quarter, as her offensive production was a major turning point in this game.

Over the last few weeks, Paris has looked more comfortable on the floor, as she’s quickly becoming a key rotation player for the Tar Heels.

Along with Paris, coach Courtney Banghart received a major boost off the bench from Destiny Adams. Over 19 minutes of action, Adams scored seven points to go along with four rebounds, three steals, and two assists. She made some timely plays, both offensively and defensively, that kept her on the floor down the stretch.

Overall, the Tar Heels hit 11 of their 14 shots from the floor over the final 10 minutes of play. The offensive efficiency came at the perfect time, as their strong stretch was too much for Notre Dame to handle.

Prior to the game, Deja Kelly was honored for scoring her 1,000th career point in the Tar Heels’ previous game. In this one, Kelly scored 14 points, most of which came while Notre Dame was face-guarding her in an effort to slow her down offensively.

Alyssa Ustby was able to stay out of foul trouble, and Banghart relied on her for all 40 minutes of action. She finished the afternoon with 12 points and five rebounds.

This is a huge win for the UNC women’s basketball program, as they not only end the skid but beat one of the nation’s top programs. The Tar Heels will look to use this as a momentum builder, as they’ll travel to Charlottesville to take on Virginia on Thursday night.
