No. 21 Men’s Hoops Surges Past UMBC, 80-64, Closing Out Non-Conference Play

COLLEGE PARK, MDLed by 19 from Don Carey, the No. 21 Maryland men’s basketball team closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 80-64 win over UMBC on Thursday night at the XFINITY Center.

The win improved the Terps to 10-3 on the year as they nextΒ return to Big Ten play starting Sunday afternoon at Michigan. The Retrievers fell to 9-5 on the season with a six-game winning streak halted. The game marked the first meeting between the two teams since 2017 and was the 15th consecutive win for Maryland in 15 all-time meetings.

Jahmir Young finished the night with 18 points, sevenΒ boards and two assists. Hart had 6 boards and was 5-of-8Β from the field. Don Carey hit 5Β three pointers to finish with 19Β points – a new season high and his best shooting performance since hitting four triples against both Saint Louis and Miami in the Mohegan Sun Tournament.

The first half saw the Terps come alive with a 10-0 run that was sparked by a three-point play from Young and a quick four points from Hart giving Maryland a 21-17 lead at the 9:15 mark. Young had five of the points in that run which pushed him over the 1,600 plateau for his career.

Maryland clamped down defensively holding UMBC without a field goal for nearly six minutes in the first half as the Retrievers went 0-for-9 from the field after starting the game 7-of-14. Jarvis Doles, who finished with 13 points in the…
