Panthers Move to 2-0 in ACC With 84-82 Win At Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior forward Blake Hinson scored a game-high 25 points and 13 rebounds, while Nelly Cummings added 22 points and six assists to secure an 84-82 conference win over Syracuse Tuesday night at the JMA Wireless Dome. Pitt opens conference play with a 2-0 record for the first time since the 2015-16 season.
 
Hinson and Cummings combined for 47 points, shooting for a combined 51.6 percent (16-of-31) from the field. Cummings went 6-of-11 from beyond the arc, including making four threes in the first half. The Midland, Pa., native matched his career-high in three-point field goals (6).
 
Greg Elliot contributed 12 points and seven rebounds for his eighth double-figure scoring game of the season. Jamarius Burton and Jorge Diaz Graham each added nine points.
 
Pitt jump to a 41-33 lead at the half as the offense proved to have the hot hand from deep. The Panthers knocked down eight three-point field goals and shot 53.3 percent (16-of-30) overall from the field before the break. Pitt’s defense stepped up, holding Syracuse to just 1-of-12 from three-point range and 13-of-31 from the field.
 
The Panthers used a 16-2 run to take a 25-14 lead at the 9:40 minute mark. Pitt hit four three pointers during the run, including Cummings knocking down two back-to-back treys.
