Ohio State hoops’ Holden hits buzzer-beating three vs. Rutgers

Things didn’t look very encouraging late in the game against Rutgers for the Ohio State basketball team’s Big Ten opener. The Scarlet Knights used some scrappy defense and a couple of free throws to go up by three points with just under 8 seconds to go. Rutgers then decided to foul Bruce Thorton rather than allow the Buckeyes a shot at tying the game with a three-pointer.

Thorton hit both free throws calmly, and Ohio State sent Rutgers to the line with just five seconds left off the ensuing inbounds. Just one of two free throws was made, and it set up a full-court scramble by Ohio State off the rebound. Brice Sensabaugh grabbed the rebound and dished it to Bruce Thorton who got squeezed along the sideline before shoveling a desperate pass to Tanner Holden who had to thrust a shot up from well beyond the arc.

And here’s how it all went down.

Chaos and jubilation ensued and Ohio State starts the Big Ten season off on a very, very high note with an exhilarating and improbable 67-66 win. Now the Buckeyes get a little break before heading to New York to take on North Carolina.
