As American as apple pie. That’s pretty much Dick Vitale with college basketball.
On a night where ESPN celebrated the contributions over the years to the V Foundation and encouraged viewers to give if they could, there was once again no better voice for the night than the man that has been synonymous with the sport.
Vitale has been the V Foundation’s biggest cheerleader and fundraiser. When Hall of Fame North Carolina State head basketball coach Jim Valvano delivered his famous 1993 ESPY’s speech, there was Vitale helping his good friend in Valvano up and down the stairs to the stage to deliver the iconic speech.
Of course, Vitale recently won his own well-publicized battle against cancer. Back in August, Vitale announced that he was cancer free after extended battles against lymphoma and melanoma that forced him out of the broadcasting booth for extended periods of time.
Fans cheered that news at the time. Last night, they cheered Vitale being back in the broadcast booth alongside his play-by-play partner in Dan Shulman for the second half of the Jimmy V Classic’s doubleheader featuring Iowa and Duke.
This lead-in reminds us that this is just a game.

God Bless’em.
