Arkansas coach Eric Musselman was even-keeled on the outside after the Razorbacks, the No. 9 team in the country, needed a push in the final four minutes to knock off UNC-Greensboro on Tuesday night, 65-58.
The Razorbacks head man knew his team was bound to have a game like that, a game in which several players didn’t have their A-games.
But a team with Nick Smith Jr., Anthony Black, Makhi Mitchell and Devo Davis found enough athleticism and skill to avoid a Top-25 upset, something that has plagued several highly-ranked teams early in the 2022-23 season.
All four of those Arkansas players scored in double figures and the Razorbacks limited the Spartans to just 31% shooting from the field.
But it was defense that most concerned Musselman afterward. UNC-Greensboro made nine 3s to Arkansas’ three.
Here’s everything Musselman had to say post-game. Note: His remarks are paraphrased.
Oftentimes you have one guy have an off night or two guys. All the credit goes to UNCG from a defensive standpoint. We had a lot of guys just not play as well as they have. They kind of all did it in one game. Not all, but many. I thought down the stretch our guys played composed. … I thought that their team came in with great confidence. I thought they played with great maturity. For us, maybe we didn’t handle the great second half we had against San Jose State and put that behind us. … But certainly, down the stretch we played well enough to win the basketball game.
Won’t be any update until he gets with the medical people tomorrow and they’re able to MRI it or X-ray it. … It (the injury) certainly changed, on a night we were really struggling, certainly changed the complexion. We had a lot of players playing out of position that we’ll have to try to get correctly really quickly before we play a really good Oklahoma team on Saturday. We need everybody ready to play from start to finish.
