Texas A&M defeats SMU 83-64

The Aggies are officially on a hot streak winning three in a row after defeating SMU 83-64 on Wednesday night, as head coach Buzz Williams relied on Henry Coleman III and Julius Marble, who combined for 33 of the 48 points in the paint, with a season and team-high 23 from Coleman. In one of their best offensive outings of the year, the lead at one point ballooned to 24 points in the second half.

After only shooting 33% in the first half, the Aggies shot an impressive 50%, while living in the low post and finally hitting their outside shots, while heavily benefitting from 24 points off of 11 steals on the night, as SMU turned it over 19 times in a struggling effort to maintain clean possessions throughout the night.

It was simply a game of runs for an Aggie team still attempting to figure out which starting lineup would yield the best early results, as Williams’ this time went with size in inside, starting Coleman and Marble at the 4 and 5 spots, as Marble took advantage inside early, scoring 6 of the teams first 12 points to start the game. Playing distributor for most of the night, Wade Taylor IV had a season-high 9 assists and 13 points in a rather lackluster shooting performance.

Texas A&M led 45-36 at halftime, as Mustangs guard Zhuric Phelps had 17 points at the, finishing with 23. As I stated earlier, this was a game of runs, as SMU came within five points in the second half after a three-point play by SMU forward Samuell Williamson, The Aggies, led by Coleman and Manny Obaseki who combined for 8 points went on a 15-2 run to take a 67-49 lead with over 8 minutes remaining.

With over three minutes remaining in the second half, the Aggie’s run grew to 16-5 off of seven more points inside from Coleman, which ultimately sealed the game for the maroon and white.

Texas A&M will face Boise State on Saturday, Dec. 3rd as the game will be played in Fort Worth. The matchup will be broadcasted on ESPN U at 6:00 PM CT.
