The Florida Gators are back in Gainesville Wednesday night to kick off a three-game home stand with a matchup against the Florida A&M Rattlers. Coming off a 29-point loss to West Virginia in the fifth-place game of the Phil Knight Legacy Tournament in Portland, Oregon, there’s not a ton of optimism surrounding this Gators team right now.
Fortunately, the Rattlers present the Gators with a relatively easy opportunity to bounce back from the blowout loss. FAMU picked up its first win of the season on Monday against Albany State University, bringing the team to 1-4 on the season. The most notable loss during that four-game losing streak, at least to Gators fans, was the 17-point loss to Oregon State, a team Florida beat 13 last week.
This will be the 12th matchup between these two programs on the hardwood but the first since 2009. Florida’s won all 11 contests over the years, including the lone game played on neutral ground in Tampa during the 2006-07 season. Every other game in the series has taken place in Gainesville.
After an ugly stretch in Portland, Florida needs a bounceback game more than ever. FAMU doesn’t have the size necessary to limit Colin Castleton, and Todd Golden has suggested that Kowacie Reeves will get more playing time than the combined 10 minutes he was on the court over the last week. A bit angry over a near 30-point loss to WVU, Florida should beat the brakes off of FAMU.
