Quincy Guerrier Villanova

PORTLAND β€” With just six healthy scholarship players available, the Oregon men’s basketball team showed tremendous heart Sunday in beating Villanova, 74-67, to close out the Phil Knight Invitational at Chiles Center.

The Ducks trailed for only 38 seconds, but among those brief moments was a 67-64 deficit with 2:27 to play. The UO men then closed out the game with a 10-0 run, tying it on Quincy Guerrier’s sixth three-pointer of the afternoon and getting the next five points of the game from Will Richardson.

“Will and Quincy just showed how important leadership is, and experience,” UO coach Dana Altman said. “Those two guys were really good today.”

Guerrier matched his career high with the six threes, on his way to a game-high 21 points. Richardson added 19, Kel’el Ware had 13 and Rivaldo Soares scored 10 for the Ducks (3-4), who also got a career-high eight points off the bench from LΓΆk Wur and utilized walk-on guard Gabe Reichle in the starting lineup for the first time in his career.

“The guys did a great job,” Altman said. “I thought everybody tried to step up. That’s really good leadership by Will to keep everybody connected. I thought they did a really good job.”

How It Happened: After a brief 4-2 lead for the Wildcats, Guerrier’s first three-pointer of the day gave the Ducks a lead that they sustained for the rest of the first half. He made two more in a row for a 15-6 lead, and a three-pointer by Richardson followed by two free throws from Soares got the lead to 23-13.

Villanova hit four threes over the final eight minutes of the first half, closing within three at 30-27 before a three-pointer by Reichle. That was Oregon’s only basket during a 10-3 run that got the Wildcats within 33-31, before Richardson scored to give the Ducks a 35-31 lead at halftime.

A dunk and a hook shot by Ware helped Oregon get out to a 42-33 lead in the second half. Threes by Guerrier and Wur on consecutive possessions then got the lead back to double digits at 58-48.

From there Villanova mounted an 8-1 run to close the gap, eventually tying it 64-64 before going up 67-64 with a three on their next possession. But Guerrier answered to tie it up again, sparking the 10-0 run that got the Ducks the win.
