The No. 12 Texas Longhorns tip off their 2022-2023 basketball season tonight. They will face the UTEP Miners at 8 p.m. CT in the Moody Center.
Heading into the season, there are multiple new faces set to join the team. Sir’Jabari Rice and Tyrese Hunter enter as the premier transfer players for the Longhorns.
Rice and Hunter are set to make an immediate impact following tournament runs with other teams last season. Hunter is familiar with the grind of a Big 12 schedule. This year, he’ll face the conference alongside better talent.
Dillon Mitchell and Arterio Morris headline the freshman class and bring the highest upside on the team. Morris flashed his three-point ability in a preseason exhibition against Arkansas, while Mitchell will often be the best athlete on the court.
Here are a few things to monitor in tonight’s game.

Texas had to blend a number of transfer players into a brand new system last season. We will see if Marcus Carr, Timmy Allen and company can produce cohesive offensive play after a year in the system.

Everybody has a role in the basketball team. There’s a good chance Chris Beard has told every player their role for this season. Clearly, roles can be fluid as various players emerge. Even so, we will get some idea of what players will be asked to do in 2023.

We were somewhat robbed of the Dylan Disu experience as he missed a significant portion of last season. His offensive contribution from the post will be worth monitoring this year.
