Chivers’ Chili and Tanin Intrigues, Ramblers win their Exhibition Game

The Loyola Ramblers matched up with the Purdue Northwest Pride this past Sunday afternoon in their only exhibition game. The Ramblers won the game over the Division 2 opponent, 73-65. One player I wanted to highlight was true freshman, Kira Chivers. When both Maya Chandler and Jala Johnson picked up two early fouls, Chivers came in to give the Ramblers some key minutes. Although it might not show in the box score, Chivers did a lot really well on Sunday. She was lighting quick on the fast break, she initiated the offense at times, and she played some great defense. As Coach Guth put it, “I love the excitement of how she defends, she gets up in people’s chili.” With the cold weather moving into the Chicagoland area, Chivers might have found the recipe to help out Loyola this season. Keep your chili recipes close to the vest Rambler fans, Kira Chivers is coming for them.

The Ramblers used a strong 2nd half to extend their lead to 14 points when they looked in command of the game. The Pride clawed their way back into the game when they cut the Loyola lead to a meager 5 points with 2:12 left in the game. But a jumpshot by Sitori Tanin and a pair of free throws by Sam Galanopoulos gave the Ramblers the insurance they needed. Head Coach Allison Guth took away a few good things from the game, “I’m proud of our team’s competitive effort. And I’m happy at how we scored in the paint, especially considering we were down 2 post players.” Their paint play was especially impressive. Of the 73 total points Loyola scored, 40 of them came in the paint, 22 came from the free throw line, and 9 came from 3 point range. The 2 points that are unaccounted for? Those came from Tanin’s jumpshot to extend their lead back to 7 with under 2 minutes remaining in the contest. Tanin’s performance was very impressive. She had a team leading 17 points, 11 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots. When asked what was working Tanin told me, “my boxing out was working, it was a very physical game. We were trying to get into our 6 second offense.” If this is how well Tanin plays during a physical game, I’d love to see how she plays when the post play isn’t as physical. Look out!

Injury Notes:

Destiny Jackson was in a walking boot. Coach Guth did not give any specifics to her injury or a timetable on her return. Emma Nolan is dealing with a back issue. Emma along with Julia Hoefling are two players that Guth hopes to get back in the next two weeks. Hoefling hurt…
