Montrezl Harrell almost joined Celtics before signing with Sixers

James Harden wants more two-man action with Joel Embiid for Sixers

The Philadelphia 76ers made a nice move toward the end of free agency when they brought in Montrezl Harrell to bolster the bench. He is a former Sixth Man of the Year and he brings energy and toughness.

However, there was another team in pursuit of Harrell, and that team was the Boston Celtics, who beat Philadelphia in the season opener on Tuesday. The C’s were in on Harrell to replace the injured Robert Williams III as they needed big man help.

In the end, Boston signed Blake Griffin and the Sixers ended up with Harrell. Per Brian Robb of MassLive, Harrell explained what happened with the Celtics:

“We had talks,” Harrell said of Boston’s interest. “Honestly, it didn’t work out. We did have conversations but their mindset, where they wanted me to play or how they wanted me to play was not ideal. The situation I’m basically in or was going to be in, it wasn’t going to work out.”

“It was toward the end (of free agency),” Harrell said of the talks with Boston. “After I finished up everything I had going on this summer. It’s no secret, everywhere knew what took place (with my arrest). After I finished up that (legal situation), they had a few conversations with my agent but the role they wanted me to be in wasn’t going to benefit me, but just their situation. At the same time, it’s got to be a give and take but you have to give something.”

Harrell didn’t have a great game in his Sixers debut, but he is a proven veteran. He is going to bounce back and help this team whenever they need it to succeed.
