Johnson, Brown-Turner, Rivers Collect Preseason Honors from ACC

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Wolfpack women’s basketball is represented by three players on the Atlantic Coast Conference’s preseason awards lists as Jakia Brown-Turner and Diamond Johnson were named to the Preseason All-ACC Team and Saniya Rivers was featured on the Newcomer Watch List.

The conference office also released the predicted order of finish for the 2022-23 campaign, and NC State was selected to finish third in the league. The Wolfpack received eight first-place votes and was picked behind Louisville (31 first-place votes) and Virginia Tech (17 first-place votes). NC State has now been selected to finish in the top three in the league four seasons in a row.

Johnson, who was the ACC Sixth Player of the Year following the 2021-22 season, is the Pack’s top returning scorer from last year. The junior was featured as an Honorable Mention all-conference honoree following her first season at NC State during which she averaged 10.8 points, 2.2 assists and shot 40.2 percent from the floor.

Brown-Turner is a preseason All-ACC selection for the third season in a row after being named to the First Team All-ACC in 2020-21 and earning All-Tournament honors in 2021-22. Entering her senior campaign, Brown-Turner has already been named to the watch list for the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award after putting up averages of 9.8 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists while shooting 44.4 percent.

New to the ACC after transferring from South Carolina during the offseason, Rivers makes the league’s Newcomer Watch List and was also previously named the No. 5 impact transfer in the nation by ESPN.com. The Wilmington, N.C., native appeared in 27 games for the Gamecocks during the team’s campaign that culminated in a national title win and was the 2021 Gatorade National Player of the Year coming out of high school.
