Defend The Block: Hunter on Coaching, Team Building and Spirit

Chris Hunter, the Director of Basketball Operations for the University of Michigan men’s basketball team, not only does a ton of work that may not be noticed by the outside eye, but also serves as a mentor for the team in his own capacity. The 2022-23 season marks the eighth year that Hunter will work behind the scenes to best support the team and foster relationships for success.

“You are trying to interact with these guys as much as you can, just try to build relationships with them and be a resource for them in any way possible,” said Hunter. “All of that time spent with our guys is valuable because it builds the foundation of the team, it brings everyone closer together and it springboards you into hopefully a really good season.”

Hunter played basketball for Michigan and later went on to play internationally. International play is within the realm of the men’s team, especially this year. In August, the team had the opportunity to travel to Paris, France for preseason practice. Later this year in December, they will be heading to London, England for the Basketball Hall of Fame London Showcase. By going abroad, the players are able to get unique experiences on and off the court, all while building relationships.

“These summer tours are a different thing, the stakes are not as high as far as playing games, you are out there to get some work in basketball-wise but, the biggest part of it is giving the student-athletes an experience,” said Hunter. “Hopefully it is something they can learn from and remember during their time here at Michigan. We put a lot of time and effort when we are not playing and not on the court are memorable.”

With more team bonding, natural leaders begin to emerge. Some of these leaders are returning Hunter Dickinson, Jace Howard and Terrance Williams II. “We have to look to Hunter Dickinson as one of the better players on the team to lead us in a lot of different areas and he’s embracing that, day-by-day is a steady progression of his ability to lead this group in various different ways,” said Hunter. “We just want to continue to push these guys and the vets.”
