Proposed trade sends Alec Burks to Bulls for Coby White, Javonte Green

Alex Caruso ranks he and Lonzo ‘top 5-10’ in guard on-ball defense

NBA training camp is right around the corner, starting next week league-wide.

In most cases, the majority of the rosters around the league are set, but there’s always room your favorite team to make a late trade or free agent acquisition to round out their roster.

For the Chicago Bulls, they head into the 2022-23 season with the same core as last season, along with the veteran signings of Andre Drummond and Goran Dragic.

Andy Bailey of Bleacher Report proposed trade ideas for every NBA team prior to the regular season kicking off next month. For the Bulls, they send two young rotation players to the Pistons for a veteran two-way wing.

Bulls receive: Alec Burks

Pistons receive: Coby White and Javonte Green

Bailey explains:

“Coby White is only 22 years old. He just shot 38.5 percent from three last season. There’s probably some upside yet to uncover.

But having DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine and Nikola Vucevic puts the Chicago Bulls in a win-now window, and Alec Burks would be a short-term upgrade.

His wingspan is five inches longer, he’s a more experienced defender and he’s hit 40.1 percent of his threes over the last three seasons.

Of course, this isn’t a one-for-one deal. Javonte Green is also listed. And though he proved to be a useful rotation player last season, he’s mostly here for salary-matching purposes.”

As Bailey notes, this trade would provide the Bulls with another veteran presence on the wing. Burks can play the role of primary ballhandler as well as move without the basketball and come off screens for open 3-point looks.

But, sending both White and Green for Burks? It seems like a hefty price for the Bulls. Would Burks be a beneficial rotation piece? Sure, but he doesn’t put Chicago over the hump as a contender in the East and losing Green’s defensive activity and versatility would hurt Billy Donovan’s depth, especially with Patrick Williams’ injury history.
