Michael Foster Jr. has to have a big camp, preseason

In this new series, Sixers Wire looks at the 20 players, per Sportrac, that comprise the Philadelphia 76ers roster — 18 currently under contract and the two players on two-way deals — and gives each three goals for the 2022-23 season.

The new season begins on Oct. 18, and training camp begins on Sept. 27. Now is the time to begin previewing the new season of adventure that is Sixers basketball. Philadelphia will have to trim a few players as the active roster limit is 15.

This edition focuses on Michael Foster Jr. who is here on an exhibit 10 contract which is good for only training camp and the preseason. Therefore, he really has to have a big camp and preseason in order to be converted to a two-way deal before the season starts.

For Foster Jr., here are his three goals:

Impress in camp and preseason

Foster Jr. is an undrafted rookie who played for the G League Ignite in the 2021-22 season and he averaged 14.8 points and 8.8 rebounds. In the summer league, he brought a ton of energy and he was very good on the glass and on the defensive end of the floor. He has to bring that energy and earn the trust of Doc Rivers and the coaching staff in order to earn a spot in the organization.

Show off some shooting

As mentioned, Foster Jr. was terrific on the defensive end, but on offense, he wasn’t much of a shooter. He shot 33.3% from deep on less than one attempt in the summer league and that was after he shot just 31.3% from deep for G League Ignite. There is a lot to like about his game, but in order to earn a spot with the franchise, he has to be able to knock down jumpers.

Learn from the veterans

Especially for Foster Jr., the veterans on this team should do wonders for him. The fact that he can lean on Joel Embiid and Tobias Harris in order to learn the NBA ropes will help him move forward as a player and it should give him a chance to be able to earn a spot in the organization. Whatever lessons he can soak up from them as well as PJ Tucker is something he should take advantage of.
