NBA’s In-Season Tournament Would Feature Eight Teams Advancing To Knockout Stage

Adam Silver Concerned By 'Trend Of Stars Not Participating In Full Complement Of Games'

The NBA and NBPA are continuing to discuss the framework of an In-Season Tournament, which could begin as soon as the 23-24 season.

The proposal contains Cup games through November with eight teams advancing to a single-elimination tournament in December while the other 22 teams will continue with the regular season.

All of the games will be part of a normal 82-game schedule, while there will be one extra game for each of the two final teams.

Adam Silver has pushed for an in-season tournament for several years despite tepid support. Silver has modeled the tournament after European soccer competitions such as the FA Cup, though those differ dramatically from the NBA’s proposal as it is open to hundreds of clubs beyond the Premier League.
