Julian Champagnie will have to develop in G League

In this new series, Sixers Wire looks at the 18 players that comprise the Philadelphia 76ers roster — 17 currently under contract and the one player on two-way deals — and give each three goals for the 2022-23 season.

The new season begins on Oct. 18, and training camp begins on Sept. 27. Now is the time to begin previewing the season and get everybody set for a new adventure of Sixers basketball.

This edition will focus on the team’s one two-way player at the moment, Julian Champagnie. After going undrafted out of St. John’s, Champagnie signed a two-way deal with the Sixers shortly after the draft back in June and he played in summer league with Philadelphia. He averaged 19.2 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 2 assists during his junior season with the Red Storm. That performance comes a season after he earned the Big East Most Improved Player award for the 2020-21 season.

For Champagnie, his three goals for the 2022-23 season are as follows:

Meet Mr. Karl

Considering he is on a two-way deal and he is playing for one of the deeper and talented teams in the NBA, Champagnie is likely ticketed to be in the G League with the team’s affiliate, Delaware Blue Coats. There, he will meet the team’s coach, Coby Karl, who will give him every opportunity to continue to develop and grow so he can receive an opportunity at the NBA level at some point.

Become a consistent shooter

In college, Champagnie was a career 34.8% shooter from deep and he only shot 12.5% from deep in seven summer league games in Utah and Las Vegas. In order to survive in today’s NBA, he will have to be able to improve as a shooter and be able to be a consistent source of offense on that end of the floor. Shooting is obviously a premium in the league so he must get better with his jump shot.

Become a two-way player

Champagnie has nice size at 6-foot-8 and if he can work on his shooting and become a legitimate 3-point threat combined with being a pest on defense, that would be a huge help for his career. The Sixers could always use a player who can produce on both ends of the floor and become an actual contributor to this team in the long run.
