Theis may miss tourney; Gallo, Datome return

The alumni of the Boston Celtics currently taking part in the 2022 EuroBasket competition may end up getting thinner than initially expected, but the injury bug does seem to be improving for at least a pair of Boston alumni currently taking part in the first such EuroBasket competition since the start of the pandemic.

We are speaking about news that former Celtics center Daniel Theis may be at risk of missing EuroBasket play despite recent reporting that both current Boston forward Danilo Gallinari and Theis would likely sit for the remaining exhibition games before the competition begins next week due to injury.

Initially, Theis and Gallo were seen as probable to return to play in the EuroBasket in an article by Eurohoops, with the remaining qualifier schedule in doubt for the pair.

Now, a new report from Eurohoops’ Johnny Askounis suggests the German’s participation in EuroBasket hinges on the German National Team’s assessment next week.

“Sidelined since appearing in the opening game of the series of friendly contests (Theis)”, writes Askounis, “is training individually and monitored by the medical staff of the German national team in the attempt to be cleared to compete in EuroBasket.”

While the nature of the Salzgitter native’s injury woes is less clear, Gallinari’s is much less so and seemingly on the mend, with the Italian swingman even making a brief appearance in his National Team’s 96-80 win over the Czech National Team.

While the show was stolen by new Utah Jazz player and teammate of Gallo Simone Fontecchio with 18 points and 5 assists, The Rooster was able to check in and score a basket and a steal after missing time with a sprained ankle.

In other good Celtics-related news, Boston alum Gigi Datome has also returned to the Italian National Team from injury in time for EuroBasket play.
