The Denver Nuggets reportedly plan to keep Collin Gillespie after the undrafted rookie from Villanova underwent surgery to repair a left leg fracture, according to Mike Singer of the Denver Post.
Gillespie sustained the injury late last month and underwent surgery on July 29 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His father, Jim, said the injury was suffered while helping out at a Villanova team practice and that he would be cleared to return in approximately 5-6 months.
The Nuggets, who signed Gillespie to a two-way contract, plan to support him throughout his injury recovery. He is a favorite of head coach Michael Malone and the team was thrilled to have signed him after the NBA draft on June 23.
Gillespie was named a third-team All-American last season after averaging 15.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists and one steal as a fifth-year senior. He finished as the all-time program leader in games played (156) and the No. 12 scorer with 1,858 points.
He had a strong showing in the Las Vegas Summer League with the Nuggets, averaging 11.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.5 steals in four games. He scored in double figures three times and had his best game on July 10 with 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
