Chicago Bulls rookie Justin Lewis will undergo surgery on his right knee after sustaining a recent ACL injury, the team announced on Tuesday.
Lewis, who went undrafted out of Marquette, reportedly suffered the injury away from the team during a workout. The injury was initially feared by the team to be serious as he will now be sidelined indefinitely after requiring surgery to repair it.
The 20-year-old signed a two-way contract with the Bulls after a strong sophomore campaign last season. He was named the Big East Most Improved Player after averaging 16.8 points, 7.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.1 steals in 32 games.
Lewis appeared in the Las Vegas Summer League with the Bulls, posting 7.6 points and 4.4 rebounds in five games. He finished his stint with his best game, recording 11 points and five rebounds in a win over the Philadelphia 76ers on July 16.
While the team did not reveal the full extent of the injury, Lewis will likely miss significant time after undergoing surgery in the coming weeks. The team had high hopes for him this season but will now begin without him in the lineup.
