Max Christie is still confident in his 3-point shooting

Some fans of the Los Angeles Lakers have been questioning the decision to take Michigan State University wing Max Christie with the 35th pick in last month’s draft.

One of the reasons why is that he was a poor 3-point shooter during his long season as a Spartan.

Although Christie gave plenty of effort defensively and on the boards during NBA Summer League play, he made just 22.2 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc and 28.6 percent of his overall shots in five games there.

Still, he is confident that his outside shooting will come around.

Via The Athletic:

“I’m just not really worried about it,” Christie said. “I know I’m a good 3-point shooter. I think that’ll come with time. That’s probably my biggest strength. It’s just not happening right now.”

The Illinois native feels that perhaps he just needs to relax a bit during games in order to start hitting shots.

“I think it’s mental pretty much at this point,” Christie said. “I think every time I catch the ball, I’m really focusing on making the shot because I’m trying so hard. That’s why I miss those all the time. I think it’ll take time just mentally decompressing when I get the ball and knowing I can knock the shot down.

“So, it’ll come in the more games I play. I think it’ll get better. And, again, it’s just summer league. I’m just getting my feet wet. I’m not worried about how I shoot suddenly.”

It’s certainly a good thing that Christie is expressing profound confidence in his ability to hit from the perimeter.

However, at some point not too long from now, he will need to convert that confidence into results, otherwise, Lakers fans may start calling him a bust or a wasted pick.

But often, the confidence Christie appears to have is at least half the battle of getting results.
