Warriors ‘motivated’ to match Michael Jordan’s NBA titles

Mychal Thompson's accurate Timberwolves burn for Warriors latest title

The Warriors just won their fourth NBA title in eight seasons, but they aren’t done yet.

In fact, Mychal Thompson can almost guarantee they aren’t.

Klay Thompson’s dad appeared on 95.7 The Game’s β€œWillard and Dibs” show Thursday morning, where the two-time NBA champion shared why he doesn’t believe there will be any complacency from the Warriors’ Big Three when it comes to securing more rings.

β€œThey won’t be complacent,” Mychal Thompson said. β€œYou’ve got three competitors leading the way in Draymond [Green], Steph [Curry] and Klay [Thompson]. They’ve got four, but you know they want to get to five, they want to get to six.”

During an interview with the station back in June, Thompson said the key to Golden State’s dynasty persisting is for the front office to keep its championship roster together. He pointed to teams like Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls and the Los Angeles Lakers of the early 2000s as dynastic teams that were broken up too soon.

Even though the Warriors lost Gary Payton II and Otto Porter Jr. to free agency this offseason, their veteran core remains. And in Thompson’s eyes, his son, Curry and Green most likely are looking to Jordan as an example of what they want to achieve.

β€œI can guarantee you — they probably won’t say it publicly — but I can guarantee you they’re probably thinking, β€˜Man, if we could only match with Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, that would be great,” Thompson said. β€œNow forget about Bill Russell. Nobody’s ever going to get to 11.

β€œBut six is the next standard, and I’m sure the Warriors are thinking, β€˜Let’s get to six. Let’s try to match with Jordan.’”

And Thompson, along with plenty of other NBA fans and analysts alike, believe the Warriors have a good shot of at least reaching five rings as soon as next season.

β€œThey’re going to be very motivated, and they’re going to be, I think, the favorites again because you’ve got them young guys now coming up behind them, ready to take the next step,” Thompson said.

The future is bright, especially now that James Wiseman is back in the mix, Thompson added.

And while there’s plenty of competition in both the West and the East when it comes to securing another Finals title, the Warriors’ core has proven time and time again…
