Klay’s dad shares how Warriors are ‘motivated’ by MJ’s titles originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea
The Warriors just won their fourth NBA title in eight seasons, but they arenβt done yet.
In fact, Mychal Thompson can almost guarantee they aren’t.
Klay Thompsonβs dad appeared on 95.7 The Gameβs βWillard and Dibsβ show Thursday morning, where the two-time NBA champion shared why he doesnβt believe there will be any complacency from the Warriorsβ Big Three when it comes to securing more rings.
βThey wonβt be complacent,β Mychal Thompson said. βYouβve got three competitors leading the way in Draymond [Green], Steph [Curry] and Klay [Thompson]. Theyβve got four, but you know they want to get to five, they want to get to six.β
During an interview with the station back in June, Thompson said the key to Golden Stateβs dynasty persisting is for the front office to keep its championship roster together. He pointed to teams like Michael Jordanβs Chicago Bulls and the Los Angeles Lakers of the early 2000s as dynastic teams that were broken up too soon.
Even though the Warriors lost Gary Payton II and Otto Porter Jr. to free agency this offseason, their veteran core remains. And in Thompsonβs eyes, his son, Curry and Green most likely are looking to Jordan as an example of what they want to achieve.
βI can guarantee you — they probably wonβt say it publicly — but I can guarantee you theyβre probably thinking, βMan, if we could only match with Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, that would be great,β Thompson said. βNow forget about Bill Russell. Nobodyβs ever going to get to 11.
βBut six is the next standard, and Iβm sure the Warriors are thinking, βLetβs get to six. Letβs try to match with Jordan.ββ
And Thompson, along with plenty of other NBA fans and analysts alike, believe the Warriors have a good shot of at least reaching five rings as soon as next season.
βTheyβre going to be very motivated, and theyβre going to be, I think, the favorites again because youβve got them young guys now coming up behind them, ready to take the next step,β Thompson said.

The future is bright, especially now that James Wiseman is back in the mix, Thompson added.
And while thereβs plenty of competition in both the West and the East when it comes to securing another Finals title, the Warriors’ core has proven time and time again…
