Sixers believe Jaden Springer ready to take leap forward in 2nd season

CAMDEN, N.J.–While the Philadelphia 76ers did not make a pick in the 2022 draft, as they traded it away, they still do have young players on this roster from their 2021 draft.

Jaden Springer, the No. 28 overall pick of the 2021 NBA draft, only played two games in his rookie season with the Sixers, but he did make an impact with the Delaware Blue Coats in the G League. He averaged 14.9 points and 4.7 rebounds while helping the Blue Coats make a run to the G League finals in 2022.

Considering how young he is and the athleticism and defensive prowess he possesses, the Sixers have hope that he can take that next leap in his second season.

“We think he can take a big leap forward,” said president Daryl Morey. “He was on that same runner-up champion G League team. Defensively, he’s there. Defensively, he’s only 19 if my memory serves so he’s defensively an NBA player, in my opinion.”

When Springer was selected, the billing in on him was that he was a very good defensive player while needing development on the offensive end. He was able to prove his defensive chops in the G League and he then averaged double-figures which gives Morey and the Sixers hope.

“The offense was really coming on strong,” Morey added. “He had some injury issues with the G League last year. In and out with sort of a nagging thing that is over so I think a lot of guys take a step forward year 2 and we expect that with Jaden.”
