Ex-Celtics guard Phil Pressey to retire, assistant coach at Missouri

Phil Pressey might be hanging up his jersey, but he isn’t leaving the game. The former Boston Celtics point guard announced his retirement as a player this week, but it came coupled with an announcement that he’ll be making the leap to the other side of the clipboard.

β€œWhile I love this game playing-wise, I’m happy to change my perspective and get into coaching. My alma mater (Missouri) is a good starting point,” tweeted the Celtics alumnus, signed by Boston after going unselected in the 2013 NBA draft. β€œBasketball has given me so much, and now it’s my turn to do the same.”

β€œIt’s my turn to show them what I did wrong for them to improve on,” he explained. β€œThat’s the thing I am most excited about to be able to give back.”

Pressey played in 125 games over two seasons for Boston between 2013 and 2015, averaging 3.1 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game over that stretch.
