Kyrie Irving, Nets Impasse In Contract Talks Could Lead To Trade

Sean Marks Looking Forward To Meeting With Kyrie Irving To See If It's 'Right Fit For Both Sides'

The NBA offseason has only just started and there’s already a major player in play that was unexpected. Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets have reportedly reached an impasse in contract talks. That could open the door for Irving to leave the club he joined just three years ago to team up with Kevin Durant.

The Nets and Irving not being locked in on a new deal opens the door for the All-Star guard to leave Brooklyn. Teams like the Los Angeles Lakers, LA Clippers and New York Knicks have all kept tabs on Irving’s situation.

For the Lakers and Clippers, they need Irving to opt in for his final season vs joining their teams via sign-and-trade. Due to hard cap reasons, the Lakers and Clippers are highly unlikely to make a sign-and-trade workable. If Irving opted in, he could then sign an extension later, or he could re-sign in the summer of 2023.

The Knicks have the ability to acquire Irving after an opt-in or via sign-and-trade. That type of move would also have the benefit of keeping Irving in New York, which was something he stressed was important when he joined the Nets.
