STANFORD, Calif. – Heading to the Farm as the program’s first transfer since 2009, Michael Jones joins the Cardinal program as a graduate transfer. The 6-5 guard spent the last three years at Davidson, where he was one of the top shooters in the Atlantic 10. He has two remaining years of eligibility.
“This is a groundbreaking moment for Stanford basketball,” said Jerod Haase, the Anne and Tony Joseph Director of Men’s Basketball. “Most importantly, Michael is a fantastic kid from a great family. He is driven to achieve both on the court and in the classroom, and will fit in perfectly with the Stanford community.”
Jones started all 34 games for Davison in 2021-22, averaging 11.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game while shooting 46.1 percent from the field, 42.1 percent from 3-point range and 84.3 percent from the free throw line. The Woodbury, Minnesota native helped lead the Wildcats to the Atlantic-10 regular season championship and an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament as a 10 seed.
“I’m really excited to get out to Palo Alto and start working with the team,” said Jones. “I felt I had a great connection with the guys both on and off the court and a staff that really believes in me as a player. I can’t wait to help this team win!”
Jones is a career 40.3 percent 3-point shooter, joining a Stanford team that set a program record for 3-point attempts last season.
“On the court, Michael provides a tremendous skill set,” continued Haase. “He can score in a variety of ways and can defend multiple positions. He played an integral role on an NCAA Tournament team and will provide experience that will immediately lift our program. We are so excited to have Michael join the Stanford community.”
The Cardinal’s last transfer in 2009 was Andrew Zimmerman, who started his career at Santa Clara and Foothill College before joining the Stanford program for his final three seasons.
Stanford went 16-16 in 2021-22, with the season coming to a close in the Pac-12 Tournament following a buzzer-beating win over Arizona State and a narrow loss to No. 2 Arizona. The season included the Cardinal’s first win over a top-five opponent since 2007 and its first over a top-25 team on the road since 2014.
