Pivotal offseason for Daryl Morey as Sixers’ executive

Ever since Daryl Morey took over the front office of the Philadelphia 76ers, it hasn’t ever been an easy job. To his credit, Morey has done a lot to turn around the franchise since taking over as president of basketball operations.

He came into a situation with a poorly constructed roster with Josh Richardson and Al Horford alongside Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons. He was able to flip those two into Seth Curry and Danny Green.

He then had to deal with the Simmons fiasco and held out for his former franchise player in James Harden. After acquiring Harden from the Brooklyn Nets, he hasn’t looked like he did during his Rockets days. This team failed to get past the second round yet again in the postseason, so now Morey has the most pressure he’s ever had during this offseason to get things right.

Morey has to get things right in the offseason for the Sixers.

There are several aspects Morey has to make the right call on. The biggest issue Morey needs to approach is the Harden contract talks. Harden has a player option and is extension eligible this offseason. Morey can’t make an emotional decision and he has to make sure he makes the best decision for the team. Whether that means paying him less or potentially moving on from him.

Another aspect that Morey has to address is team building. He has to figure out if the “Core 4” is the group he wants to build around or not. Then there’s filling out the bench with the type of players that can improve the talent in that area. Also what do with the injured Green as his contract isn’t guaranteed.

How that roster performs next season could very well impact Morey’s future with the Philadelphia 76ers. If he doesn’t make this roster better, then he could be on the hot seat moving forward.
