The University of North Carolina basketball program has had some iconic players come through over the years. Legends have played for this program and over time, some underrated greats as well.

That’s especially true at the point guard position.

The position has seen several top players come through and run the Tar Heels’ offense whether it be under Dean Smith or Roy Williams, UNC has always managed to find talented guards. That’s the case with Ed Cota who might be one of the more underrated players in UNC history.

And even LeBron James thinks so.

In a poll put out by UNC’s official Twitter account asking who is you favorite UNC point guard of all time, James responded by saying he grew up watching Cota.

The Brooklyn, New York product committed to North Carolina and was a 1996 McDonald’s All-American. He spent four seasons in Chapel Hill averaging 9.1 points and 7.5 assists in his career paying a true point guard role.  He led the ACC in assists in all four seasons and was named the 1996-97 Rookie of the Year for the league. Cota was also named All-ACC second team three times in his career.

With that, we wanted to take a look back at Cota’s career at UNC with a photo gallery. Enjoy!
