Nuggets Will Pay Luxury Tax 'If The Team Is Good Enough'

The Denver Nuggets are poised to bounce back to contention with a healthy roster in 2023. To get there, the team will also need to add some help on their roster, and it appears Nuggets ownership is willing to pay to do so.

In his season-ending media availability, Nuggets president of basketball operations Tim Connelly said that the team’s governors have given him clear direction on paying the luxury tax.

β€œIf the team is good enough, they’ll pay accordingly. So, I don’t think that will be any sort of issue moving forward,” Connelly said. “I mean, we’re getting really, really expensive. It’s a blessing and a curse because you’re paying really good players.”

The Nuggets have made only minimal tax payments in their history. And Denver hasn’t been over the tax line since 2010. Denver is essentially at the tax line for next season with only eight players under contract. This puts them in position to pay the tax for the first time in over a decade.
