UGA’s most famous graduates, attendees and fans

Established in 1785, the University of Georgia is the first state-chartered public university in the United States.

With a living alumni base of more than 340,000 former students, UGA has a distinguished alumni community of scientists, entrepreneurs, Academy Award winners, U.S. senators, Pulitzer Prize recipients and governors.

There’s the famous alumni and attendees you’ll recognize from the football field, tennis and basketball courts and the golf course. And there’s celebrities who did not attend UGA, but you may be surprised to see them donning Bulldog apparel on a fall Saturday.

Here’s a look at some of UGA’s most famous alumni, attendees and fans.

Ryan Seacrest

Known for: Co-host of Live with Kelly and Ryan, host of American Idol

Georgia ties: Born in Atlanta, attended Dunwoody High School, briefly attended UGA before moving to Hollywood.

Samuel L. Jackson

Known for: Actor; has more than 150 films to his name, including: Pulp Fiction, Do the Right Thing, True Romance, Jurassic Park, Django, Jackie Brown, Snakes on a Plane and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Nick Fury).

Georgia ties: A graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta and a diehard UGA fan.

Bill Perry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Michael Stipe: R.E.M.

Known for: The four University of Georgia students who formed R.E.M. captured the spirit of Athens in the early 1980s and took college radio by storm. Over a 31-year run as multi-platinum-selling artists, R.E.M. became international superstars by creating a niche never witnessed before … oblique lyrics, intellectualism, a quirkiness, all encompassing soulful music … a new musical language that captured the imagination of a generation and spawned a musical revolution.
