USC needs to throw its hat into the ring with many elite transfers

It is true that spending time in the pursuit of a recruit or transfer means that time isn’t spent on another player. To that extent, it’s logical and reasonable to say that coaching staffs and programs need to pick their spots when going after transfer portal entrants and recruits.

Yet, there is also something to be said for at least taking extra time to be part of a recruitment or a portal pursuit, even if the odds of success aren’t great. Merely showing interest — showing that a given player is wanted and valued — sends a message to a player and his family. It could mean that if the player transfers a second time or reconsiders his decision (things which do happen from time to time), that school could be an option.

USC is not a blue-blood program, so the Trojans and Andy Enfield know they won’t be a first choice for a number of high-profile transfer portal players. However, they can always make an overture — a simple gesture of interest — to high-profile players even if the odds are slim to none the player will think about moving to L.A.

One such player is Johni Broome, a 6-10, 235-pound forward from Morehead State who is in the portal.

Broome averaged 16.8 points and 10.5 rebounds per game as a freshman this past season. He was a beast for Morehead State. He played a tough, physical style and held his own against Belmont and Murray State, two quality opponents in the Ohio Valley Conference.

Broome will be a great get for the program which lands him. USC isn’t very likely to get Broome, but it should at least communicate with Broome and other elite transfers rather than think it isn’t even worth the time due to the low odds of an actual commitment.
