Michigan State basketball gives seniors a fitting sendoff with 77-67 win over Maryland

EAST LANSING — Senior Day couldn’t have started better.

Joey Hauser to Marcus Bingham Jr. for an alley-oop dunk. Gabe Brown with a 3-point play, then setting up a 3-pointer for Bingham. And Bingham draining a second on the next trip.

Michigan State basketball scored the first 14 points against Maryland on Sunday, and Breslin Center was rocking. The lead swelled to 20 by halftime. A rout looked inevitable.

Until the Terrapins started ripping off runs to start the second half. First 10 straight, then 12 straight. All of a sudden, the 25th-ranked Spartans found themselves in another dogfight with inside of eight minutes to play.

Once again, it was time for the seniors to deliver.

Brown scored seven straight points for MSU after Maryland cut the lead to three points with inside of seven minutes to play, Hauser tiptoed along the sideline to save a possession, and the seniors got the sendoff they looked for with a 77-67 victory.
