Lost in the hubbub of this afternoon’s league-shifting trade between the Sixers and the Nets is James Harden’s decision to pick up the option on his contract:

As part of deal, new 76ers star James Harden is opting into his $47.3 million player option on contract for next season, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium.

I will preface by saying that there certainly exists a possibility that he and the Sixers already have come to a (non-binding) agreement to a long-term extension. That isn’t reporting or any type of sourced information. Rather, it is merely an acknowledgement that these things are sometimes conditions of finalizing a trade. For all we know, Woj or Shams might report an extension as soon as the calendar turns to August 10, 2022.

But, what if that doesn’t happen? What if Harden goes through at least part of next season without a long-term marriage to the Sixers?
